THE “Asian Smart City Conference: Mayors Summit” has gathered mayors and representatives from different cities from around the world where they exchange knowledge, experiences, and approaches to resolve city liveability challenges through smart technologies.
Held in conjunction with the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2022 which kicked off yesterday, it is one of the biggest conferences that the Selangor Information Technology and Digital Economy Corp (Sidec) has ever planned for.
It has attracted the participation of 11 mayors and representatives including Taipei City, Taiwan; Asan City, Korea; Jakarta Smart City; Sunshine Coast Council, Australia; and Amsterdam Smart City, The Netherlands, among others.
Under the Asian Smart City Conference, there will be the Net-Zero and Circular Economy Forum on Oct 7, gathering 24 experts who will discuss on Smart Mobility and Zero-Emission Vehicles; Smart Waste and River Management; Solar, Biofuel and Biomass Energy; Smart Cloud and Data Governance; Smart Technologies for Energy; and Green Investment and Financing.
The conference is part of the Selangor Smart City and Digital Economy Convention (SDEC) 2022, a four-day event under SIBS 2022, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said as cities are one of the main drivers of economic growth of a country, natural disasters like deadly heat waves, long droughts, heavy rainfall, flash floods, and forest fires would not only cause loss of life and economic crises but also wreak havoc on food and energy supply.
“Implementing Smart City initiatives seems to be the way forward as cities focus on utilising intelligent physical, social, economic and institutional infrastructure and digital tools to deliver quality service to its citizens and enhancing their quality of life.
“Under the Smart Selangor Action Plan 2025, the Selangor government is spearheading the adoption of smart digital technologies via four key domains namely Smart Government, Smart Economy, Smart Community and Smart Digital Infrastructure to pursue inclusiveness, resilience and innovation in realising the vision of Selangor as a Livable Smart State in Asean by 2025,” he said when officiating SDEC 2022 yesterday.

Amirudin also noted that there has been a surge of interest among the public on electric vehicles (EVs) or zero-emission vehicles such as EV Bus, E-Car, E-Bike and E-Scooter.
“There is a heated discussion on the Transport Ministry’s banning of personal mobility devices (PMDs) such as e-scooters on public roads due to errant e-scooter owners who modified their machines and were caught racing on public roads.
“As Malaysia’s micro-mobility market is expected to expand to US$4.55 billion by 2030 and 15,000 micro-mobility vehicles have been estimated to be sold in 2021, perhaps it is high time we regulate both sellers and vehicles, and educate more users on the safety measures that they should follow,” he added.
The opening of SDEC 2022 also saw the launch of Selangor Digital School (SDS) to solve the shortage of digital talents in Selangor as it pushes forward toward digitalisation.
SDS is a co-creation project that symbolises the collaboration of the central and state governments, private investors, venture capital funds and start-ups.
Amirudin also recited the Selangor Declaration on Sustainable Smart Cities, witnessed by the city representatives.
Meanwhile, Selangor State Executive Councillor for Industry and Trade Datuk Teng Chang Khim said this year’s SDEC is expected to generate 10,000 visitors and business leads with various business matching opportunities.
“It is a testament to Selangor’s Digitalisation and Smart City efforts over the last seven years that brought together SMEs, retail merchants, Digital Service Providers, business chambers and tech communities,” he said at the opening ceremony. — TMR
