ABSTRACT

The fields of electronics and computer science have combined to create one important technological advance: the Internet of Things (IoT). While still in the early stages of development the impact of IoT on Smart City has been substantial. The emergence of opportunities for Smart City has improved efficiency, production, communication, resource planning, sustainability, operational performance and quality of life. Further implementation of IoT in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 or IR 4.0 takes the nation one step further into the advancement of IoT in Smart City development. Cities must create the necessary conditions for continuous development as IoT becomes increasingly important to urban infrastructures and building sustainability. As the future of IoT is to provide solutions for all including infrastructure, mobility, energy, health, building and retail, smaller cities may share a common Smart City platform. The cloud-based nature of IoT solutions for Smart Cities is appropriate through the sharing of a platform based on open data. The COVID-19 pandemic shows the need for future cities to incorporate social distancing, movement tracking and sanitising systems in buildings and public amenities. The use of autonomous vehicles and drones for mobility needs, delivery of goods and surveillance must be considered to minimise the spread of diseases.
